Midsomer Norton is a small-town nestling in the beautiful Mendip hills of north Somerset some 13 miles south of Bath, which was served by the Somerset and Dorset Joint railway.
This model represents the station in the 1950/60s. Successive station masters maintained for many years the tradition of winning the ‘Best Kept Station’ award. The greenhouse alongside the signal box must be a fairly unique piece of station architecture. The flower beds in the always immaculate triangular lawn represented the sun, moon and a star.
The road bridge crosses Silver Street and was bridge No.48 in the line. Like many along the line it has been lost due to road improvements. The missing bridge now forms the northern limits for the ‘Somerset & Dorset Railway Heritage Trust’ line which operates from the station and has a short line running south west to Chilcompton Tunnel.
Modelled at a scale of 10mm:1ft the general essence of the station and goods yard has been captured and restores memories to those who knew the area. Motive power is generally live steam fuelled by either methylated spirits, gas or coal and provides an exciting spectacle!!
